Born in Sumatra, Indonesia, Lucien Frits Ohl (1904-1976) was a self-taught artist. He produced paintings, watercolors, drawings and pastels and is recorded mainly for his decorative Indonesian landscapes. Ohl lived in Indonesia until 1954 and in The Hague until his death. Ohl’s paintings feature a sketchy and impasto brushwork that he mostly works with a brush or a spatula. The forms, composed of numerous areas of color, appear like impressions shaped by the light.
